|Extent:||0.08 cubic feet (4 microfilm boxes)|
A federal act of 1882 established procedures for recording immigrants arriving in the United States. The records maintained by federal immigration officials were often called immigration passenger lists of manifests.
This collection consists of a microfilm copy of "Passenger Lists of Vessels Arriving at Savannah, Ga., 1905-1945," a portion of the National Archives and Records Administration's "Records of the Immigration and Naturalization Service, 1891-1857." The National Archives microfilm copies of the passenger lists vary in information and content. Generally the lists contain the following information: name of master of vessel, name of vessel, names of ports of embarkation and arrival, date of arrival, name of passenger, age, gender, marital status, occupation, nationality, last residence, final destination, whether the passenger had been in the U.S. before, and if so, the relative's name, address, and kinship to the passenger. The format of passenger lists was revised in 1903 to include race. In 1906 they added personal description and birthplace, and in 1907 they included name and address of nearest relative in the immigrant's home country. Immigration passenger lists include the names not only of immigrants but also of visitors and U.S. citizens returning from abroad.
Original records in the National Archives.
