Biographical/Historical Note

An act of March 2, 1819 provided that effective January 1, 120, the captain of a vessel arriving at a port in the United States or any of its territories from a foreign country must submit a list of passengers to the collector of the district in which the vessel arrived. Every collector of customs also had to submit quarterly returns consisting of copies of passenger lists to the Secretary of State. An original list was prepared on board the ship, sworn to by the master of the vessel, and filed with the collector of customs when the ship arrived at the port.

Scope and Content Note

This collection consists of a microfilm copy of reproduced copies of original passenger lists or abstracts of passenger lists of vessels arriving at various ports on the Atlantic coast. These passenger lists contain the name of the vessel, name of the master, name of port of embarkation, date of arrival, name of port of arrival, and for each passenger: name, age, gender, occupation, name of country of origin and country of intended settlement, and date and circumstances of any deaths en route, if applicable. The abstracts usually contain the name of the district or port, quarter-year of arrival, and sometimes name of port of embarkation. Copies and abstracts contain for each passenger the same information that is found in the original lists, but some information may be abbreviated.
