Biographical/Historical Note

Mac Gordon (Edward McGuire Gordon) was born in Savannah, Georgia on May 5, 1916, son of George Arthur Gordon, nephew of Juliette Gordon Low, and grandson of General W.W. Gordon. He graduated from St. Paul's School in Concord, New Hampshire in 1934. He received his Bachelor's in Arts degree from Yale in 1938 and his Master's degree from New York University School of Finance in 1939. Before being called to active duty in 1941, Gordon was employed by the Central Hanover Bank and Trust Company in New York and with A. Minis & Company in Savannah, Georgia. Gordon served as a U.S. Naval Lieutenant Commander in the Pacific theater in World War II. Gordon contracted malaria during his station in the southwest Pacific. He died at sea of a heart attack on August 18, 1944.


Scope and Content Note

This collection consists chiefly of correspondence in the form of letters, postcards, and V-mail between Mac Gordon and his sisters (Mary Stuart Gordon Platt and Peggy Gordon Seiler) and between Gordon and his brother-in-law, Richard Platt. Much of the correspondence concerns Gordon's service in the United States Navy during World War II. Other major topics of this correspondence include discussion of the stock market with Richard Platt; Gordon's bout of malaria and his declining health; and familial matters.

This collection is arranged into 7 folders. 4 folders contain correspondence between Gordon and his family members, including school letters to his father, Arthur Gordon, from Gordon at St. Paul's School in Concord, N.H. One folder contains letters dated 1944-1946 pertaining to Mac Gordon's death. The letters are from Maurine M. Horton and from Lt. Commander T.H. Adams. One folder contains letters, postcards, and v-mail from Mac Gordon to his family members and includes a letter from "Gerry". One folder contains newspaper obituaries of Gordon's death, church programs, and one photograph.
