Biographical/Historical Note

John Couper Stiles was born January 4, 1865 in Savannah, Georgia. He spent his early childhood in Bartow and Glynn counties, and resided in Brunswick, Georgia from 1888 until his death on July 14, 1956. He served as a Lieutenant Colonel in the naval militia in the Spanish-American War.

Scope and Content Note

This collection consists of a scrapbook of newspaper clippings compiled by John Couper Stiles. Stiles served as a Lieutenant Colonel in the Spanish-American War. The clippings consist of letters to various publications, mostly to the Savannah Morning News and the Army and Navy Journal. In these letters, Stiles expresses opinions on military matters, mostly concerning the Civil War and World War I.

The front cover contains the inscription "Scrap Book of John C Stiles Brunswick Ga Sept 1951". The back cover contains the name and address "Jimmie Couper 1210 Piedmont Ave NE Atlanta Ga".
