James Dunwoody Jones was born May 1, 1842 and died on February 21, 1904. He married Mary Cornelia Ashley on November 2, 1870 and they had 9 children.
James Dunwoody Jones served as an Officer for the Confederacy during the American Civil War and was made 2nd Lieutenant Drill Master for the C.S.A. on November 7, 1862. Jones served as Drill Master at Andersonville Prison.
Collection contains information pertaining to Simon Munro. There is extensive information that connects James Dunwoody Jones' genealogy to Simon Munro from Scotland. Other relatives include Major John Dunwoody Jones who married Jane Bulloch (daughter of James Bulloch), Jones' great grandparents; Colonel James Dunwoody and Elizabeth West Smith, Jones' grandparents; and Dr. John Jones and Jane Adeline Dunwoody, Jones' parents.
This collection contains an autograph book, a daguerreotype and ambrotype, clippings and articles, correspondence, financial records, indentures, genealogy records, maps, notes, photographs, writings, and artifacts dating 1621-2010. Colonail era items of interest include a manuscript indenture between Simon Munro of Parish Saint John and Simon Patterson and John Pettigrew of Sunbury for lease dated year 1774; a letter from Mr. Arthur Carney respecting the Stock May 1768 written from the Cowpen; and a letter dated July 22, 1621 labelled, "Shaftesbury" addressed "Sir Anthony-Ashely-Cooper Care of Shaftsbury".
Civil War era materials include a leather whip belonging to James Dunwoody Jones that was reportedly made by him; an autograph album of Confederate Prisoners of War held at Fort Warren near Boston November 27, 1861; a memoir of Jone's time as Drill Master at Andersonville Prison entitled, "The Departure and Return of Peace" (also published in
Civil War Times Illustrated, February 1964); military records naming Jones to the position of Drill Master; and Confederate money.
Items from the Reconstrution and World War II era include a one year agreement with the State of Georgia, Liberty County, dated December 29, 1868 written by J.D. Jones and signed "X" by "free persons of collor [sic]" to cultivate land at Laurel View; a rental agreement for "Liberty Co. Jan. 10 1869 of Laurel View between Sam Munroe signed by his mark and J.D. Jones; and a World War II photograph album.

'The above Plot delineates seven adjoining tacts of land situate in Libery County on and near a fine navigable stream, and the Rev. Mr. John Jones is the proprietor. These tracts collectively form a valuable plantation. The soil is peculiarly adapted to Cotton. The marsh land is high and extremely fertile: draining and culture would make it very productive. On this plantation a considerable quantity of rice might be raised also. The uncleared land is well timbered. Resurveyed & executed by Wm. Hughes, C.S.L.C. Septmber 8th, 1847.'
