James P. Houlihan, Jr. (1908-1979) was born and died in Savannah. He married Joan Egan Houlihan and they had a daughter, Joan Louise Houlihan. He served active duty in the United States Coast Guard Reserve during WWII. James was an attorney in Savannah and Senior Partner of Hunter, Houlihan, Maclean, Exley, Dunn, and Connerat. He graduated from Harvard Law School, was a member of the GA Bar Association and American Bar Association, and served as president of the Savannah Bar Association. Houlihan was very active in the Savannah community, having served in many civic and benevolent societies, including serving as presidents of the Health and Hospital Planning Council, Bethesda and Savannah Children's Center, the Oglethorpe Club, the Hibernian Society. He also served as chairman of the financial board of the Catholic Diocese of Savannah, James was also a retired member of the Board of the Savannah Bank and Trust Co.
Not much is known of Helen Marvine Walker. Known from her collection, she earned a Bachelor of Arts Degree in 1935 and a Master of Arts Degree in 1936.
This collection is made up of materials from two separate, unrelated estates: the Houlihan family and the Walker family. The collection was processed at the basic level. Papers, mainly that of box #1 were rehoused and refoldered due to a lack of original order in that box. Original order was kept throughout the remainder of the collection.
The first portion concerns the Houlihan family, primarily James P. Houlihan, Jr. and contains: certificates; photographs; photo albums; evacuation instruction manual, "Escape from the H-Bomb;" ephemera; "M.S. Grass Knot" memorabilia; yearbooks; and Kodak carousel picture slides. The bulk the materials for the Houlihan part of the collection are 1950s and 1960s.
The Walker family portion of the collection contains: clippings; diplomas; correspondence; church bulletins; and a Walker family history. The bulk of the Walker portion of the collection late 1980s and 1990s.
This collection is arranged into 4 boxes:
Box 1: Contains 14 folders which includes items such as U.S. Coast Guard Discharge papers and certificates; High School diploma for Joan Louise Houlihan; photographs; evacuation instruction manual, "Escape from the H-Bomb," notes on a local legal matter; Mary Maclean Health Association membership list; House of Representatives resolution on the passing of James P. Houlihan, Jr. and a Portfolio of Savannah River Themes from Savannah Bank & Trust Company. These folders are followed by a scrapbook kept by Houlihan, an oversized photograph, framed/bound family portraits, two funeral registry books, two family photo albums, and a Savannah Country Day School yearbook from 1956.
Box 2: Contains a framed portrait of a little girl; a baby memory book; framed certificate to James P. Houlihan, Jr. from St. Joseph's Hospital; a gavel; 2 pairs of baby gloves; baby's record book; envelope containing Houlihan's military tags; bronzed baby booties; metal "Schrafft's" box full of mementos such as photographs, prayers, cards, newspaper clippings, marriage license of Houlihan's parents, buttons, military uniform bars, rosary; wooden box labelled, "M.S. Grass Knot" which contains M.S. Grass, a C1-M-AV1 ship, Knot pin and chain, letter explaining box and contents, and a champagne bottle used by Mrs. Houlihan when M.S. Grass Knot was Christened; scripture birthday book; leather-bound testimonial dinner program honoring Sister Mary Cornile Dulohery, R.S.M.; framed photograph; special passport that belonged to Houlihan.
Box 3: Contains six boxes of Kodak carousels of family slides, 1965-1971.
Box 4: (Helen Marvine Walker) contains three handkerchiefs; diploma for Helen Marvine Walker from Universitatis Carolinae Australis, 1935 for Bachelor of Arts Degree; Diploma for Walker from the University of South Carolina for Master of Arts Degree, 1936; 3 large, unmarked portraits; booklet: "Andrew Jackson at the Hermitage" (inside is a handwritten piece of paper that lists dates of tariffs, serving Presidents and their party affiliations, and the purpose of the tariffs); cancelled checks from The Citizens and Southern National Bank, signed by H. Marvine Walker and all written to P.H. Durden Music Store for a piano; Book: The Courtship of Miles Standish, Elizabeth, and Other Poems by Henry W. Longfellow; notecards, postcards, and Christmas cards; "Templo De Cristo" Guadalajara; bulletins for the Independent Presbyterian Church dated May 7, 1989 and May 9, 1999; The Parish Paper of St. John's Church" dated July 14, 1996; keepsake bulletin from the funeral of William Ashton Walker, dated December 18, 1910- December 3, 1996; "A Trinity Pageant" by the Reverend Carroll Lund Bates; bulletins for St. John's Church; church sheet music; "The Parish Paper of St. John's Church, dated July 4, 1999; other church bulletins and papers; loose photographs, plastic ring-bound book, "Walker Station Photographs," compiled by Lawrence M. Hunter, Jr. November 1999 (inside are a few loose papers, one of which is labelled "Walker Family History"); book commemorating 75th anniversary of Dixie Crystals; newspaper clippings, mostly religious in content.
