Hadley Baston Cammack (1898-1986) was born in Greencastle, Indiana on May 3, 1898 to Adeline Katherine (Buston) Cammack and James Orville Cammack. He graduated high school in 1916 and attended college for one year at DePauw University, leaving to enter the United States Army for wartime service. He served with the 64th Heavy Artillery as a corporal during a year in France. Cammack later resumed college at Purdue University. While attending school, he was on the gymnastics team for three years, and served as captain 1921-1922. He graduated with a Bachelor of Science in Electrical Engineering in 1923. Cammack was employed by Chicago Surface Lines on June 15, 1923, where he designed Coordinated Traffic Control System for Chicago's Loop District.
On September 6, 1927, he married Pauline Dicksen of Chicago and they had three children. He took a position with Houston Electric Company in March 1928 as Superintendent of Traffic. On January 1, 1946 he moved to Savannah, and with three other men, purchased the transit operations of the Savannah Electric and Power Company. They began operating under separate management as Savannah Transit Company. There Cammack was part-owner, Vice President, and General Manager; he retired in January 1972.
In Savannah, he served as Chairman of the American Red Cross chapter in 1948 and 1949. He established the Red Cross Regional Blood Center in 1949, the third in the United States, for which he received a Lucas Trophy. In 1955 he organized the Better Business Bureau of Savannah and served as its president from 1955 until 1960. His wife died in 1969 and he later married Lucille Morgan of Savannah. Mr. Cammack died in 1986 at 88 years of age.
This collection contains personal letters with family members; photographs of Cammack and his sister in chronological order as they were growing up; correspondence, photos, and articles related to Cammack's work experiences as an Electrical Engineer working traffic control in Chicago, Houston, and Savannah, specifically photographs of The Savannah Transit Company and its employees; items and memorabilia related to Cammack's many contributions to the Savannah area including his work and accomplishments with the local American Red Cross Chapter; items and memorabilia from his college experiences at Purdue University; materials related to his service in the U.S. Army and World War I.
