Biographical/Historical Note

James E. Hilley was born 1918 in Jackson, Butts County Georgia to Catherine Oberia Moore Hilley (1879-1960) and Francis Edgar Hilley (1872-1948). He had two siblings Wayne Hilley and Annie Fredna Hilly (1907-2003). James graduated from the University of Georgia in 1948 with a journalism degree. He served as a Technical Sergeant in the Air Force during World War II. James Hilley died in Macon, Bibb County, Georgia in 2007.


Scope and Content Note

This collection contains the correspondence of James E. Hilley for the years 1931-1967 containing not only letters received by James but his responses as well. A majority of the letters are from friends and family including siblings and concern school and family news, farming and mid-20th century life in the South. There are also letters during times when James was stationed at an Army Air Base in Pocatello, Idaho. Some of the war time letters are military V-Mail, also called Victory Mail. The letters have been arranged chronologically.
