He married Mattie (Martha) Traylor in, the daughter of John H. Traylor of La Grange, in 1888. They had three children: Ruth and William Jonathan, Jr. (twins) and George Traylor Northen.
Mattie (Martha) Northen was born in Forrest Home, near LGrange, Georgia, graduated from LaGrange College in 1876, and attended Mount Vernon Institute in Baltimore, Maryland. Mattie was active in the Red Cross during World War I, was a member of the Shakespeare class in Atlanta for twenty-eight years, and organized the Shakespearean Garden Club. She was also a charter member of the Atlanta Art Association, the Fine Arts Club, the LaGrange College Alumae Association, and continued the work of her late husband and son in assisting thirty-three theological students in finishing their courses at Emory University. She died at her home at 766 Piedmont Avenue in Atlanta, Georgia, in 1934.
This collection contains Fulton County (Ga.) deeds, correspondence, clippings, an address book, and notes of Mattie (Martha) Traylor Northen and two of her children, William Jonathan Northen, Jr. and Ruth Northen.
