Biographical/Historical Note

The Savannah Fair, Inc., American-Grecian Turpentine Corp., Citizens Loan and Investment Co., and the Gahoma Oil and Gas Co. were all early 20th century companies incorporated under the laws of the state of Georgia. Savannah Fair, Inc was in business at least through 1955; American-Grecian was in business at least through the 1960s. Sawmill Construction Co. was incorporated under the laws of the state of Tennessee. Florida Farming Corp. was incorporated under the laws of Florida.

The American Telegraphone Company was incorporated under the laws of the District of Columbia in 1903. The company manufactured the telegraphone, a device invented by Valdemar Poulsen. A Danish inventor, which utilized a steel wire wound in a spiral on a cylinder which rotated under an electromagnet connected to a carbon microphone or earphone. It was marketed as an answering machine.

Scope and Content Note

This collection contains 7 stock certificates dating from 1907-1921. Sawmill Construction Co. of Tennesee, 1914; Florida Farming Corp., 1921; The Savannah Fair, Inc., 1920; Citizens Loan and Investment Co. of Savannah, 1920; Gahoma Oil and Gas Co. of Savannah, 1920; American-Grecian Turpentine Corp., 1918; American Telegraphone Company, 1907. The ATC certificate is made out to Albert Henry Stoddard, a South Carolina author.

There is a sheet of paper included with the certificates that has, "7-Stock Certificates with Savannah Connections [.] Savannah Trade Mart 111 Tibet Ave- Savannah, Georgia 31406".
