Born in Macon, Georgia, William Baird completed his freshman and sophomore years at Emory University's Oxford College and his B.A. degree in physics at Emory College, where he was inducted into Phi Beta Kappa. At Georgia Institute of Technology, Dr. Baird completed M.S. and Ph.D degrees in physics and an M.S. degree in electrical engineering.
Baird pursued further study at St. John's College, Annapolis and Santa Fe, and at several Chautauqua/National Science Foundation short courses. He has co-authored five articles in the field of atomic collisions and four in applied optics, and is co-inventor of Technique for Producing Antireflection Grating Surfaces on Dielectrics, Semiconductors, and Metals," Patent Number 5007708. He is also a recipient of a NASA/ASEE Summer Faculty Fellowship at Jet Propulsion Laboratory in Pasadena, California. He has taught at the Georgia Institute of Technology, Eckerd College, and retired from Oxford College in 2008.
William Baird's mother was Addie Marie McKellar Baird (1918-2006) and maternal grandparents Anna Belle McCrory McKellar (1890-1971) and Idus Eugene McKellar (1880-1970). Anna Belle McCrory McKellar's parents were Susie Adele Berry (1866-1951) and Charles Robert McCrory (1856-1930). Idus Eugene McKellar's parents were Ella Columbia Hand (1852-1930) and Henry Hearst McKellar (1852-1913) and he had two siblings: Harry Rex McKellar (or MacKellar) (1878-1956) and Ella Clare McKellar (1887-1982).
This collection contains family papers collected by William Baird's grandparents, Anna Belle McCrory McKellar and Idus Eugene McKellar. The collection includes the papers of the McKellar family originally of Sumter County, Georgia, a photograph album of the Allen Beverly Powell family of Darien, Georgia (includes photograph identifications), and photocopies of bible records, original and color copies of photographs, clippings, copies of vital records, letters, publications, and other family materials. Also included is a typescript of the Reverend John Fraser Berry's journal dated 1857-1865. Family members represented in the collection include: Susie Adele Berry McCrory (1866-1951), Ella Clare McKellar (1887-1982), Ella Columbia Hand McKellar (1852-1930), Harry Rex McKellar (or MacKellar) (1878-1956), Idus Eugene McKellar (1880-1970), and Susie Matilda Sherman Berry Smith (1839-1925). Family names represented in the collection include Berry, Calder, Davis, Frazier, Hand, Langley, McCrory, McDonald, McKellar, MacKellar, Parkhurst, Pease, Powell, Sherman, and Smith. Collection materials are dated 1860s-1950s.
