Biographical/Historical Note

Butler King Couper, Jr. was born on 1 January 1906 in Spartanburg, South Carolina and was the son of Butler King Couper (1851-1913) and Emma Josephine Sibley (1867-1957). Couper served in the naval reserve during World War II, and remained active in the United States Navy until his retirement in 1972. Couper was also a noted oceanographer and made one of the deepest dives to the Mariana Trench in the Pacific Ocean. He died on 18 April 1993 in Tryon, North Carolina and is buried in Cottage Cemetery in Augusta, Georgia.

This collection contains the correspondence, photographs, maps, military orders, magazine, clippings, certificates, and military uniforms of Butler King Couper, Jr. during his naval career from 1924 to 1972.


This collection is arranged into 4 boxes and loose items:

Box 1: Correspondence, photographs, maps, military orders, magazines, clippings regarding oceanography, King's service in the U.S. Navy, and the Bureau of Ships, 1942-1994

Box 2: Correspondence, photographs, maps, travel expense records regarding King's retirement from the U.S. Navy and his work with the Bureau of Ships, 1962-1972

Box 3: Plaques, 1971-1972

Box 4: 2 Naval officer caps, 2 belts, 1 tie, 8 naval caps, 1 white duffle bag, circa 1940s-1960s

Oversize items: 2 certificates, 1942-1972

Loose items: Green duffle bad with 2 pairs of shoes, 1 wool overcoat, 1 naval officer's jacket and pants, circa 1940s-1970s
