Biographical/Historical Note

William G. Morrell (1852-1915) was a native of Savannah, Georgia. His company, W. G. Morrell Rice Company, was located on Bay Street. He and his wife, Katherine (Kate) Drane had one surviving son, William G. Morrell Jr., who was born circa 1892. Kate died in 1912 and William in 1915. Their son continued his father’s rice business.

John L. (1843-1891) Hammond sold seeds and fertilizer in Savannah through his company, J. L. Hammond & J. Hull Co. He was also president of the Merchants National Bank at the time of his death in 1891 at the age of 47. His wife, Ellen Marion, survived her husband until 1917 when she passed away at age 71. Both are buried in Laurel Grove Cemetery.

Scope and Content Note

This collection contains four ledgers relating to William G. Morrell Sr. and the estate of John Hammond. The first ledger is an invoice book of William G. Morrell’s rice company spanning 1890-1893. The second ledger is a letter-press copy book of William G. Morrell dating from 1893-1894. It is very fragile and difficult to read. The last two ledgers deal with the estate of John L. Hammond and accounts for his widow, Ellen. The first ledger dates from 1891-1902. The second ledger is a cash disbursement book and dates from 1891-1900.
