N. A. Hardee’s Son & Company was founded in Savannah in 1867. The business was located on Bay Street. John Lewis Hardee (1837-1891), the son of Noble Andrew Hardee (1805-1867) and his second wife, Ann Margaret Lewis, founded the company upon the death of his father, who died on September 10, 1867. John’s father had his own business, N. A. Hardee & Company, as a commission merchant. When his father died, John started his own company with his father’s former partner, General William W. Kirkland. Through N. A. Hardee’s Son & Co., John sold fertilizers and acted as a commission merchant. N. A. Hardee’s Son & Company probably ceased operations around 1886, as that is the last year they are mentioned in city directories.
This collection contains materials found in a restoration area near City Hall on Bay Street in Savannah. There is an account book, two pamphlets, a bill, and some checks from N. A. Hardee’s Son & Company, and they all date from 1877-1884. N. A. Hardee’s Son & Company were commission merchants and dealers in fertilizers. There is also a partial index that contains lists of names with notes about the person’s character. These notes usually refer to the person’s ability to pay debts and how easy they are to work with. Only letters E-S are left from the index. These index pages do not actually index any volumes, it was just used to record character notes.
