Biographical/Historical Note

George L. Armitage (1891-1964) was a doctor assigned to the 70th Brigade, Royal Garrison Artillery during World War I. He was from Savannah, Georgia and joined the British Army at the outbreak of the war in September 1914.


Scope and Content Note

This collection consists of letters sent by George Lawrence Armitage to his parents in Savannah, Georgia and later Charleston, South Carolina. The letters discuss his experiences in both England and France during World War I. The letter dated May 23, 1918, includes a photograph showing Armitage's class following training on reaction to mustard gas.
