|
Julian Killen Quattlebaum was born in 1897 in Statesboro, Georgia. He received his bachelor's degree from the University of Georgia in 1917 and played semi-pro baseball to finance his education at the Medical College of Georgia in Augusta, Georgia. He received his medical degree in 1921.
Quattlebaum's medical career lasted 56 years. He gained an international reputation as a surgeon, developed new techniques in liver surgery and helped to establish Memorial Hospital in Savannah. He married Helen Burkhalter and they had three children. Julian Quattlebaum died on February 10, 1987.
Beyond medicine, Quattlebaum had a keen interest in history and automobile racing. He wrote The great Savannah races (1957; reprinted 1983) which recalled the days when automobile races of international interest were held in Savannah from March 1908 through November 1911.
This collection contains the papers, programs, photographs and scrapbooks collected by Julian K. Quattlebaum, MD on the history of the Savannah Grand Prize Races from 1908-1911. The collection is arranged in six series: Series 1; Savannah Automobile races, March 18-19, 1908-- Series 2; Savannah Automobile races, November 25-26, 1908-- Series 3; Savannah Automobile races, November 11-12, 1910-- Series 4; Savannah Automobile races, November 27-30, 1911-- Series 5; Ephemera & miscellaneous photographs of the 1908, 1910, and 1911 races-- Series 6; Manuscript, correspondence, and programs.

The collection belonged to Julian K. Quattlebaum prior to donation to the Georgia Historical Society.
