John H. Monroe (1880-1941) was born in Monroe County, Florida, on June 20, 1880. In 1900, he joined the Savannah, Georgia, Fire Department, with which he served until his death on February 6, 1941. Monroe was appointed fire chief on January 27, 1913, and on April 30, 1941, was voted Chief Emeritus by the Savannah City Council in recognition of his long and valued service. John Monroe married Alice L. Eddy and they had two daughters, Gladys Madison Louise Monroe (1908-1966) and Elaine Francis Monroe (1904-1970). Gladys and Elaine both attended Savannah High School. Gladys, later Gladys M. Rankin, graduated from the College of William and Mary in Virginia in 1933 and taught at Charles Ellis Elementary School in Savannah.
This collection contains photographs and newspaper clippings regarding members of the Monroe family of Savannah, Georgia. Gladys M. (Monroe) Rankin, Elaine Frances Monroe, and Savannah Fire Chief, John Henry Monroe are represented in the materials dating from the 1920s to 1939.
