Biographical/Historical Note

Samuel Edwin McClendon (b. 1874) was born on March 29, 1874. He married Margaret Elizabeth Sherwood Clayton (b. July 14, 1879) in 1907; they lived in Thomasville, Georgia, and Louisiana. Their children included Robertine Knox McClendon (Mrs. Arthur M. Philips of Savannah, b. 1909), Edwin Clayton (b. 1911), Travis (b. 1912), and Margaret Sherwood (b. 1916). Samuel McClendon's parents were Travis McClendon (b. 1836) and Martha Arabella Robinson McClendon (1845-1919). They married in 1866 in Quachinta Parish, Louisiana and had ten children; Samuel was their fifth child.

The Lovelace family connection was through Samuel McClendon's maternal line. His mother, Martha A.R. McClendon, was bon in Atlanta and died in Quachinta Parish. Martha's mother (Samuel's maternal grandmother) was Amanda Brooks Lovelace (1809-1888), who was born in West Point, Georgia, and died on Old Forksville, Louisiana. Amanda's father was James Lovelace (1779-1860), who was born in Maryland and died in Troup County, Georgia. Amanda's grandfather was William Lovelace, Jr. (1747-1815), who was born in Maryland and died in Columbia County, Georgia. The two generations prior to William Lovelace were William Lovelace, Sr. (b. 1727, married to Margaret Beal) and John Baptist Lovelace (d. 1765(, both of Maryland.

Scope and Content Note

This collection consists primarily of genealogical materials relating to the Lovelace/Loveless, McClendon/MacClendon/McKlendon, and allied families. Although there are some correspondence and handwritten notes in the collection, the bulk of the papers are typescript materials outlining family connections and dates. The collection contains five series: Lovelace family (1909-1954), which has three subseries: general information, specific generations, and allied families; McClendon family (1948-1954) has the same three subseries; allied families (1909-1950, with gaps); miscellaneous (1940-1956); and photographs (1867-1954).

These papers were originally organized in three-ring notebooks by Samuel McClendon. The papers were removed from the notebooks due to the acidic and rusty components of these binders, but they have been placed in folders that retain the original note book titles. Many of the notebooks and folders have title pages as the first or second sheet inside, but the notebook and folder titles do not always exactly match the title sheet. Despite the fact that McClendon's original order has been preserved (due to the cohesive nature of the papers themselves), it is not always clear how the notebooks and folders relate to each other. Also, many of the individual sheets have page numbers, but these numbers are not always indicative of how the pages relate to one another or to papers in other notebooks and folders. Major allied families in this collection include Anderson, Barber, Barclay, Beall, Bell, Clayton, Edmonston, Jenkins, Magruder, Robinson, Sandy, Stapler, Swearington, and Watkins.

The collection also contains two series of photographs. The series are Clayton family album (1867) and Lovelace and Sandys (circa 1949-1954).
