Biographical/Historical Note

Thomas T. Osteen, a native of Bryan County, was born on December 5, 1876. Osteen was a lifelong public servant for Bryan County and Georgia. He served on the Bryan County Board of Education, the Bryan County Democratic committee, the Savannah Production Credit Association, and was a state representative. Osteen also had a naval stores business based in Pembroke, Georgia.

In 1947, when Fort Stewart encroached upon the middle of Bryan County, Osteen was part of a committee that obtained funding to build a road from Pembroke to U.S. 17--Morgan's Bridge Road/State Route 204.

Thomas T. Osteen died at the age of 99 on October 13, 1976 and is buried in the Beulah Baptist Church cemetery in Bryan County.


Scope and Content Note

This collection contains indentures, warrants, and surveys for land in Bryan County. Much of the land described in this collection is now part of the Fort Stewart Reservation. Last names that appear frequently throughout the land transfers include Lanier, Bell, Harvey, and Osteen.

The material dates from 1816-1900. The warrants include their original seals. Some of the indentures are handwritten copies. Some items are oversized. The documents are arranged by type and then chronologically.
