George Washington Cheaves, Sr. (c. 1897-1946) was a prominent merchant on Old Augusta Road. He and his wife, Gladys Roquemore Cheaves (1906-1973) had five children: George W. Cheaves, Jr, Harold R. Cheaves, William Ray Cheaves; Louise Cheaves (Mrs. Lowell L. Edenfield) and Kathryn "Kitty" Cheeves (Mrs. W.B. Thompson). After living in Richmond Hill, the family moved to Savannah shortly before the death of George Cheaves, Sr. in 1946. After her husband's death, Gladys Cheaves began working at Union Bag and Paper Company. George Cheaves, Jr. served as a private in the army during World War II and then worked at Union Bag and Paper Company, too. Harold Cheaves served in the army during the Korean War and returned to Savannah after the war. George W. Cheaves, Sr. and Gladys Cheaves are buried in Bonaventure Cemetery in Savannah.
This collection contains 14 letters to and from members of the Cheaves family and the 10th grade history notebook of Kathryn Cheaves, which dates from about 1945. Most of the letters are from soldiers in the U.S. Army during the Korean War and World War II.
