Augustus P. Wetter (1829-1882) was born in Mentz in the Duchy of Hesse-Darmstadt in Germany. He came to Savannah before the Civil War and was a civil engineer under General Gilmer, planter, alderman and philanthropist. Wetter was also a Captain of the DeKalb Riflemen. He was married to Alberta Cobb Telfair; their home was at 215 South Broad St. (now Oglethorpe Ave.) He died in Harrisburg, PA at the home of one of his children. He was returned to Georgia and interred at Sharon Plantation.
