Biographical/Historical Note

The Retired Officers Association has been in existence since the end of World War I. Until the 1950s, the organization was composed solely of individual members. In the 1950s, the association created more than 200 chartered affiliates to the organization (such as the Savannah Area chapter) to serve as a "grass roots" movement to promote local legislation and to create and maintain military and personal contacts. The members strived to protect the benefits and privileges of all retired officers of the U.S. military, keeping in touch with local and state political leaders of the time. The Savannah Area Retired Officers Association was founded on March 1, 1963. In the years prior, members were affiliates to the Washington, D.C. chapter.

Scope and Content Note

This collection consists of records documenting the activities of the Savannah Area Retired Officers Association through formal correspondence, invitations, memos, itinerary, news clippings, minutes, and photographs. Also included are the group handbook, constitution and bylaws, as well as subsequent amendments. Members of the organization made a special effort to keep in touch with affiliates across the United States. Of note are the recruitment efforts reflected in rosters, mailing lists, and assorted correspondence. The photographs in the collection were taken at the 1961 and 1963 annual meetings of the SAROA. There are partial identifications of attendees on the images. The bulk of the correspondence was sent between 1964 and 1969. Included are convention, meeting and party invitations, announcements, reservations, memos, itinerary and reports; correspondence between individuals are filed separately under "official correspondence." Topics of the letters and memos include issues such as medical care and assorted requests to lobby local government officials.

The folder containing photographs is noted as "VM" (visual materials) in the collection inventory.
