Biographical/Historical Note

The Liberty ship, S.S. Juliette Low, which was built by the Southeastern Shipbuilding Corporation of Savannah, Georgia was launched on May 29, 1944. It was operated by the South Atlantic Steamship Line and carried cargo for the British, Lend-Lease, the United States Army, and UNRRA in the Atlantic, Pacific, Mediterranean, and to North Africa until May 22, 1948. It was placed in the Wilmington Island, North Carolina reserve fleet, but was withdrawn on April 20, 1951, to carry grain under the emergency program of aid to Europe. It was then placed in the reserve fleet at Beaumont, Texas, on May 1, 1952. In 1972, the ship was sold for salvage and dismantled. The ship was named for Juliette Gordon Low, the founder of the Girl Scouts of America.
