Biographical/Historical Note

In 1804 doctors of Savannah, Georgia petitioned the Georgia Legislature to grant them a charter for a medical society. The charter was granted December 12, 1804 for the Georgia Medical Society. This date makes the Georgia Medical Society the second oldest active city medical society in the United States.

The by-laws provided for a president, vice-president, secretary, treasurer, librarian and orator. Members were called fellows. Elections were held annually though the same people were often re-elected.

The anniversary meeting was always held on the first Saturday in January. After the meeting the Society would march to the City Exchange where the Orator would deliver a speech. The regular meetings were held once a month on the first Saturday at noon. At the meetings members presented papers.

The Medical Society was formed "for the purpose of lessening the fatality induced by climate and incidental causes and improving the science of medicine." Their interest in higher education led to the establishment of a medical library.

Early meetings were held in private homes, rented rooms, and hotels. In 1914 the Georgia Medical Society bought, renovated, and dedicated the building at 612 Drayton Street. This building is still occupied by the Georgia Medical Society.
