Victor G. Schreck worked for over 50 years at the Chatham County court house. A native of Savannah, Schreck's first connection to the court house was in 1888 when he was appointed to the tax collector's office. After resigning his position as a clerk in that office, he prepared a history of the land records of Chatham County beginning with the founding of Georgia. Schreck was later employed as a clerk in the office of the receiver of tax returns. After a long illness he died at the age of 71 on 3 November 1941.
This collection contains chains of title prepared by Lawyers Association of Savannah, abstracts of title, court proceedings, correspondence, marriage settlements, wills, and other handwritten and typewritten copies of records related to property in Chatham County, Georgia. The records were collected by Victor G. Schreck when preparing a history of Chatham County land records. The content of the records dates from the 1730s to the 1920s.
Abstracts of title are organized by ward name (boxes 1 and 2) and by tract name, neighborhood, etc. (boxes 4 and 5). They are housed in Schreck's original envelopes. Some of the envelopes are sealed closed and may be opened by library staff only, upon request.
Chains of title created by Lawyers Association of Savannah (box 5) include many of the properties described in the abstracts of title (both by ward and by tract name, neighborhood, etc.). Chains of title are loose in the box and many of them are rolled and brittle.
