James Henry McKenna, Jr. attended the Cathedral School in Savannah, Georgia, and Savannah High School. He graduated from Yale University in 1949. McKenna's grandfather founded the James McKenna Supply Company in Savannah in 1881. James H. McKenna (his father) took over the family business after the death of his grandfather just before World War I and James Henry McKenna, Jr. took over the company upon the death of his father in 1967. James Henry McKenna, Jr. retired from the business in 1980 and his brother, William McKenna, became the head of the company. The company was later purchased by Ferguson Enterprises Inc. of Newport News, Virginia. McKenna died in 2006 leaving his entire estate, including his house at 111 W. Charleton Street in Savannah and all of its contents, to the Telfair Academy of Arts and Sciences.
This collection contains graduation certificates, photographs, a clipping, a cashbook regarding the house of James Henry McKenna, Jr., architectural drawings and perspectives for an unidentified house, and a land plat of Tybee Island property. Also included is a McKenna Supply Company account book dated 1974-1983. Photographs in the collection include McKenna and family members, a brick house, City Market in 1953, and a panoramic image of the south end of Tybee Island. Collection materials date from 1940-1998.
