Biographical/Historical Note

Arthur Irwin Butts, Sr. (1808-1903) was born in South Hampton Virginia. His family moved to Hancock County, Georgia in 1808. As a young boy, Butts carried the mail between Milledgeville and Buckhead (Hancock County). He served as a representative of Baldwin County in the Georgia Legislature in 1855. Butts married Georgia Thomas; they had three children: Simon, Mary Elizabeth, and Katherine.

Scope and Content Note

This collection consists of a microfilm copy of a journal of Butts family genealogy, begun by Arthur Irwin Butts, Sr. in 1898. After his death in 1903, a family member (probably his wife) continued recording the family genealogy in the journal. The latest date is on the obituary of Mrs. Arthur Butts, 1955. The journal includes Arthur Irwin Butts, Sr.'s obituary and his autobiography, dated 1899. Other family names included in the Butts family genealogy are Thomas and Thorp. This collection appears on the second half of roll X-1542-04 (from collection MS 1542).

This journal was microfilmed by the Georgia Department of Archives and History in 1971.
