|Extent:||0.05 cubic feet (1 folder)|
Jessie M. Hertz Butters (1865-1955) one of five children of Frances Cohen (1829-1886) and Edwin E. Hertz of Savannah, Georgia. She was a direct descendant of Benjamin, Mordecai, and Moses Sheftall as well as Isaac Cohen. Sometime in the late 1800s, the Hertz family scattered to Atlanta and New York City. In 1884, Jessie married Charles Butters in New York. The couple later moved to California and lived at the Roselawn Estate between Oakland and Berkeley. In the 1920s, this property was sold and the Butters moved into Berkeley. Charles died in 1933. Jessie died in St. Helena, Napa County, on February 1, 1955 at the age of 89 and is buried with her husband in Piedmont, California. Jessie Butters had no children.
This collection contains five letters written in 1978, arranged chronologically with focus upon family connections as they relate to Jessie Butters. The five letters are written by John McKay Sheftall (born ca. 1958) of Macon, Georgia, Esther(?) Butters of Berkeley, and Ruth M. Phelps of Berkeley. There are also discussions of Butters' life and personality in the letters.
