Biographical/Historical Note

James Dowse Bradwell was born around 1878 to Samuel Dowse and Elizabeth Bradwell of Liberty County, Georgia. Bradwell attended the University of Georgia and presented his dissertation to the University of Chicago.

Scope and Content Note

This collection contains a copy of James Dowse Bradwell's 1900 dissertation, "The Local Governments of Colonial Georgia" presented to the University of Chicago and a speech given by him at the commencement ceremonies at the State Normal School (now the Georgia State Teachers College) at Athens, Georgia in 1926. In his speech, Bradwell reminisces on the legacy of his father, Captain Samuel D. Bradwell during his tenure as President of the State Normal School. Bradwell's speech recounts the early history of the school and the obstacles his father encountered as its president.
