Biographical/Historical Note

A native of Germany, Joseph Goette (1832-1900) established the J. Goette Funeral Home in Savannah in 1852. He is listed in the German Friendly Society for the first time in 1867. Goette was married to Bridget Barrat (1838-1919) who was a native of Ireland. They had at least seven children live to adulthood: Clarence Read, Albert, Kate (later Hartfelder), Annie E., Henry A., Joseph, Jr., and Walter B. Goette.

The 1871 Savannah City Directory lists Joseph Goette as an undertaker and cabinet-maker.

Scope and Content Note

This collection consists of four cased tintypes of Joseph, Bridget, Clarence and Kate Goette.
