Biographical/Historical Note

Asbury Memorial United Methodist Church, South was organized in Savannah, Georgia, by Rev. J.H. Orran and Rev. David R. McWilliams on March 7, 1909. The first Quarterly Conference for the new church was held on March 12, 1909 by Dr. W.C. Lovett. Presiding Elder of the Savannah District, Dr. Lovett appointed Rev. McWilliams as pastor to be assisted by Rev. Gustavus J. Orr, Principal of Massie School. A wooden-frame, one-room church building was erected at the corner by Rev. McWilliams on July 4, 1909. The present church building was completed in 1922 and was dedicated on January 14, 1940, by Bishop J. Lloyd Decell. The present educational building was completed in 1954.

Container List

SERIES 1:: Administrative board records, 1953-1989

This series contains minutes and monthly reports of the governing board of the church. The records are arranged in a loose chronological order since the name of the governing board changed several times. At different times, the board was called the Board of Steward, Official Board, Administrative Council and Administrative Board. Because of the difficulty in distinguishing among the different board years, there exist overlapping records.
