George Adams Blount (1846-1925) was born on September 25, 1846, in Savannah, Georgia. He was the only child of Anna Richey Gale and George Lucena Blount. George A. Blount's grandfather George Mathias Blount, was from a large North Carolina family. George M. Blount's sister, Sally M. H. Blount, lived in Clinton, Jones Co., Ga., with a cousin, James Blount. It is for this Blount family that the town of Blountsville, Georgia is named. George A. Blount joined the Confederate army in September 1862, and returned home to Savannah, Georgia, after the war. In March 1866, his father died suddenly; so to support his grandmother, he went to work for the Central Rail Road and learned the blacksmithing trade. On February 9, 1871, he married Emma Pearce Ingram, a native of England. He became a Baptist minister at Bethel Church in Savannah in 1874. He died on October 11, 1925 in Pompano, Florida, and is buried in Laurel Grove Cemetery in Savannah, along with his wife and other relatives.
This collection contains the correspondence of George A. Blount's parents, George L. Blount and Anna R. Gale, and grandmothers, Jane E. White and Jannet Gale. It also contains the letters of his great-aunt and great-uncle, Sally M. H. Blount and Benjamin Blount. George A. Blount has also left some material from his Civil War service, most notably his statement of military service for the Confederate Veterans' Association. Additionally, there are some genealogical and legal material in the collection, as well as a couple of newspaper clippings. George A. Blount had taken the time to annotate much of the correspondence and papers in his possession. The only artifacts in the collection are two clippings of hair, one identified as being from Maria, a friend of Anna R. Gale, given to her on January 20, 1846. The other was not positively identified, but could possibly be from George Mathias Blount, given to his sister Sally M. H. Blount in 1817.
