Scope and Content Note

This collection is an artificial collection which means that the materials within this collection arrived at the Georgia Historical Society at different times and in different ways, but were brought together by archivists for a specific purpose. This purpose was an exhibit at the Georgia Historical Society in 2000 on World War II (1941-1945) and the war's effects on the home front in Savannah, Georgia. Many of the materials in the collection are visual in nature as they were selected for use in display cases. There are, however, informational materials such as flyers, one monograph, newspaper clippings, periodicals, and pamphlets as well. Materials include both original materials and reproductions.

The World War II exhibit collection is arranged in three series: Manuscripts and Artifacts; Art Reproductions and Photographs; and Periodicals and Newspaper Clippings. Series 1 contains both two-dimensional and three-dimensional materials and is arranged alphabetically by topic. This series also contains sound recordings. Series 2 contains images of events in Savannah during World War II as well as advertisements and propaganda of the period. Periodicals and Newspaper Clippings primarily contains original magazines from the period although there is also a 1979 special issue of American History Illustrated that focuses on the Home Front during World War II and two files of newspaper clippings. Oversized materials from Box 1 and Box 2 have been removed to Box 3 of the collection.
