|Extent:||0.08 cubic feet (4 microfilm rolls)|
Georgia first entered the Civil War in 1861, offering the services of its militia to the Confederate States of America Army.
This collection consists of a microfilm copy of a portion of the National Archives' "Index to compiled service records of Confederate soldiers who served in organizations from the State of Georgia" (NARA M253). As the Confederate government evacuated Richmond, Virginia, in April of 1865, the central military records of the confederate Army were moved to Washington, D.C., where they were preserved by the War Department. In 1903, the Secretary of War persuaded the governors of most Southern states to lend the War Department Confederate military personnel records so that they could be copied (from "Military Service Records at the National Archives" by NARA). Those copied records comprise this index.
The first roll contains soldiers Shocase through Shulebranger; roll 2 contains soldiers Shuler through Silmore; roll 3 contains Moore, R. through Morary; roll 4 contains Turhman through Tzson.
Original index in collection M 253, National Archives.
