Biographical/Historical Note

Edward Henry Girard (1877-1970) was born in Savannah, Georgia, on March 2, 1877. He attended Major Crowther's School for Boys (a Savannah school, 1889-1894) and Colonel Thompson's School before going to Newbery at Newberry, South Carolina. Girard was a professional photographer for more than fifty years. He began his photographic apprenticeship with Arthur R. Launey's Studio in 1896. In 1898, he joined M. Edward Wilson's Studio. Girard opened his own establishment, the Girard Studio of Photography, at 10 West Brought Street, Savannah, in October, 1905. In 1919, he moved his studio to 114 1/2 Whitaker Street. Girard was also an official photographer for the Savannah Evening Press.

By 1900, Girard had married a woman named Evelyn. They eventually had four daughters (Mary, Nita, Evelyn, and Raymonde) and two sons (Edward Jr. and Earl). For many years the Girards resided at 421 Anderson. However, by 1911, they had moved to Cedar Hammock. Girard retired on September 30, 1952. HE died on August 24, 1970 and was buried in the Greenwich section of Bonaventure Cemetery in Savannah.

Scope and Content Note

This collection consists of approximately 320 photographs by Edward Girard and scanned images in two boxes. The majority of images in this collection are of the Savannah area. There are many street views, exterior views of buildings, soldiers from World War I, and images of Tybee Island. The images are arranged by subject.

Throughout his photography career, Girard produced both film and glass plate negatives. Photographic prints were made of many of the film negatives in 1980. A computer and scanner were used to create paper prints of the glass plate negatives in 1998. The photographic prints and scans were mixed together throughout the collection.
