Biographical/Historical Note

This Association was formed in 1902 and in 1904 was named "Mary Maclean Circle of Kings' Daughters and Sons" (Circle No. 14). In 1905 its first visiting nurse was employed. The name was later changed to the Mary Maclean Milk Depot and Visiting Nurses Association. Its purpose was to furnish bedside nursing care to the indigent sick of the community, to carry on a health education program, chiefly for the mothers of young children in the homes visited by the nurses, to give nursing service at child care centers, to furnish sick room supplies to the indigent sick, to cooperate with the City Health Department in furnishing every type of nursing service to the community, and to furnish layettes to young mothers who could not provide them for themselves.

It established a Milk Depot in 1910 where milk was sold at reduced prices to indigent families. The visiting nursing service was for a number of years operated from the basement of a dwelling on the northeast corner of Lincoln and State Streets and the Milk Depot was operated from a small wooden outhouse in the rear of the Louisa Porter Home, (the old Savannah Free School building), on the southeast corner of Charlton and Drayton Streets. The Mary Maclean Association assisted in organizing the Health Center in 1920, which was housed in the Louisa Porter Home. The Louisa Porter Home was replaced by the new Health Center Building in 1942. The work of the Association is now incorporated in that of the Chatham County Health Department on Eisenhower Drive. In 1978 the Association became on of teh volunteer agencies on the Chatham County Combined Public Health Nursing Service, Inc. In the 1980s the group reorganized and in 1987 the name was changed to the Mary Maclean Health Association, Inc.
