During the Civil War, the government of the Confederate States of America borrowed money from individual states and banks, issuing bonds to be paid after the end of the war. The majority of these loans were never repaid.
This collection consists of a Confederate States of America 4 percent registered bond in the amount of $1,000 made out to "The Mechanics Bank." It was issued at Richmond Virginia, October 27, 1864. While there is no place listed for the Mechanics Bank, there was a Mechanics Savings Bank of Savannah during this period in Savannah, Georgia; the two banks may be the same.
