Samuel John Jones (1838-1889), physician, was the son of William Jones (1802-1885) and Mary Jane (Roberts) Jones (1806-1886). He was born near Riceboro in Liberty County, Georgia. After graduating from the University of Georgia (1856) and the Medical College of South Carolina in 1858, he practiced medicine in Liberty County until July 1863, when he enlisted as a private in the Liberty County Mounted Rangers (Company B, 20th Battalion Georgia Cavalry). After the war, he resumed practice in Liberty County until 1868, when he moved to Thomasville, Georgia, where he remained until his death. He married twice, first to Mary Hayes of Athens on October 13, 1859, and, after her death, to Mary Elizabeth Meuller of Savannah on May 28, 1878. He died January 10, 1889 and was survived by five children.
This collection consists of six letters from Samuel Jon Jones to Mary Elizabeth Meuller Jones ("Lizzie"). All of the letters were written from Thomasville, Georgia, 1878-1888, the first dated before their marriage.
