Biographical/Historical Note

The Georgia Lung Association, begun in 1919 as the Chatham-Savannah Tuberculosis Association, was a local organization. It was chartered in Chatham County Superior Court on May 7, 1920, as the Chatham-Savannah Tuberculosis and Benevolent Association "to care for and treat persons afflicted with tuberculosis in said County, and elsewhere, as it may determine." The charter was renewed by the Georgia Secretary of State in 1943. The charter was renewed by the Georgia Secretary of State in 1943 and amended in 1947, changing the corporate name to Chatham-Savannah Tuberculosis and Health Association, and again in 1950, when its powers and authority were increases. Another amendment was granted in 1950, again changing the name to Chatham-Savannah Tuberculosis and Respiratory Disease Association, Inc. in 1970. The Association became affiliated with the Georgia Tuberculosis and Respiratory Disease Association in 1971, the name of which was changed in 1973 to the Georgia Lung Association. In that year, the Chatham Savannah TB and RDA entered into a contractual arrangement with the Georgia Lung Association, and in 1974 became the Southeast Branch (Branch VI) of the Georgia Lung Association. The charter of the Savannah-Chatham TB and RDA was dissolved on December 13, 1977.

In cooperation with the Kiwanis Club of Savannah, the Association began building a Fresh Air Camp (later the Sunshine Unit) for treatment of children with tuberculosis. It opened in 1926, but closed in September, 1943; the property was ceded by the Association in 1944 as a TB hospital. This hospital was closed in January, 1959 and the site is now used y the Chatham Nursing Home.

In addition to the sale of Christmas seals, the Association sponsored various activities relating to the detection and prevention of respiratory diseases, such as Cleaner Air and Air Pollution, anti-smoking campaigns, health education, and pulmonary screening.
