Biographical/Historical Note

The Irene Mound was situated on the western bluff of the Savannah River along the south bank of the estuary of Pipe Maker's Creek. It was approximately five miles along the river from the center of Savannah. The Savannah State Docks are now on the site. In 1937, the United States government decided to excavate Irene Mound. A Works Progress Administration (WPA) project, the field excavation crew was comprised entirely of African American women. The entire project took more two years to complete.


Scope and Content Note

This collection consists of the final draft of the report, The Irene Mound Site, Chatham County, Georgia, by the Work Projects Administration in Savannah, 1940. The report states," The purpose of this report is to present the results of archaeological investigations at the Irene Mound site, Chatham County, Georgia. The work was conducted by the Work Projects Administration and sponsored by the Chatham County Commissioners and the Savannah Chamber of Commerce. Excavations were carried on continuously from September, 1937, until January, 1939." The collection also includes the Report on the Skeletal Remains at the Irene Site, by Dr. Frederick S. Hulse and Virginia Griffin.
