Biographical/Historical Note

Irene (1887-1973) and Lucille von der Leith were the daughters of Augustus Henry von der Leith (d. 1923) and his wife, Irene Turpin von der Leith (d. 1946) of Augusta, Georgia. Both sisters taught school in Augusta. Another sister, Sallie Miles (d. 1930s) was the first wife of General E.C.B. Danforth, Jr.

Augustus Henry von der Leith was the son of E.H. von der Leith of Athens, Georgia. Mrs. E.H. von der Leith (1822-1906) was born in Germany, came to American in 1844, and married in 1851.

Scope and Content Note

This collection consists primarily of letters to Lucille and Irene von der Leith. A separate folder contains letters and snapshots from the Joseph Reinkenhof family of Tyrol, whom Irene befriended after the war. There are also photographs, a cashbook, and scrapbooks. In the collection is a postcard to Rosa von der Leith, a daughter of Mrs. And Mrs. E.H. von der Leith and sister of A.H. von der Leith.
