Biographical/Historical Note

Gordon Saussy (1874-1952) was mayor of Savannah, Georgia, Ordinary of Chatham County, State port pioneer, and agriculturalist. He was the son of Robert Saussy and Gertrude L. Keller Saussy. He married Harriet Saussy Varnedoe and was step-father to Samuel Lamartine Varnedoe.

Hattie Saussy (circa 1891-1978) was the daughter of Joachim Radcliffe Saussy (1862-1904) and Rachel Louise Shivers Saussy. Hattie was a prominent artist and patron of the arts in Savannah, belonging to the Savannah Art Association and the Association of Georgia Artists.

Scope and Content Note

This collection contains information on the Saussy family as well as related families, including the Calais, Chapin, Chipman, Cornwell, Tiedeman, and Varnedoe families. The collection contains correspondence between Gordon Saussy and Hattie Saussy, papers from Gordon Saussy's legal practice, documentation of the creation of the Boy Scouts of America, Troop 8 in Savannah, and family photographs.

Calais family papers, 1910-1918, 4.0 items.
These papers consist of an ALS from Caroline G. Mallete Hale to Capt. W.C. Calais, August 27, 1910, re return of an application along with a roster of Company G of the 33rd Regiment of North Carolina Troops; a formal invitation for J.H. Calais to a dinner honoring President Taft; and two rosters of Company "C" Chatham Home Guard.

5 daguerreotypes of the Saussy family and friends, and a family Bible. J.L. Jones is written on the front page, but in the family records section of the Bible the Cornwell family is predominant. All the families here are related to the Saussys. 1851


2 scrapbooks probably owned by Miss Hattie Saussy. The first contains ALSs to Miss Saussy and to Eula 0. Champlin (Mrs. Frederick R.). These letters concern religious activities and were from 1947-1951. The other scrapbook contains letters post cards and pamphlets concerning art and religion in Savannah.


11Account Books, and a Manuscript
5 account books, 1840-1844, 1845-1846, 1847-1852, 1852-1854, and 1854­1860. All concern general supplies for J.R. Saussy. Also included in this box is a manuscript: My Calendar Stick by James Frank Pepper Breazeale (1874-1950). circa 1951. This is a biography of Mr. Breazeale as offered through his own writings. It was edited by his son Edward Lee Breazeale.
