Biographical/Historical Note

Lawton, Hart, and Company was founded in 1871 by William J. Lawton, Benjamin A. Hart, and James G. Garret of Savannah, Georgia. The main purpose of the company was to manage sales and shipping of cotton along the Savannah River. To that end, the company managed three steamboats; the Carrie, Katie, and Rosa. In 1873 Garrett left the firm and was replaced in 1875 by George Walter. In 1877, Lawton left the firm and it was renamed Walter, Hart, and Company. In 1884, Hart left the firm and the firm was renamed Walter, Tison, and Company. Throughout all of these changes, Elbridge G. Cabaniss remained the clerk and bookkeeper for the firm.
