Biographical/Historical Note

Robert Grier Stephens, Jr. (1913-2003) was born in Atlanta, Georgia and worked as an attorney in Athens, Georgia. Stephens served on the legal staff of Mr. Justice Jackson at the Nuremberg trials of major Nazi war criminals, was the city attorney of Athens, Georgia from 1947 to 1950, was a member of the Georgia state senate, 1951-1953, and was a member of the Georgia state house of representatives, 1953-1959. In 1961, Stephens was elected as a Democrat to the Eighty-seventh and to the seven succeeding Congresses (January 3, 1961-January 3, 1977).
