Bertimus J. Cubbedge (1830-1906) worked for the Central of Georgia Railroad Company for many years. From 1859-1869 he was clerk of the repair department. From 1869-1887 he was their auditor. From 1887-1888 he served as their freight agent; Cubbedge retired in 1890. He was also the treasurer and later a director of the Railroad Mutual Building and Loan Association, 1871-1882. In 1883, he was one of a number of people who requested incorporation as Railroad Loan Association. There are variant spellings of his given name.
This collection consists of letters, primarily to B.J. Cubbedge, and a notice. Sixteen of the letters are addressed to B.J. Cubbedge, 1864, and contain instructions to remove and protect provisions, supplies, etc. of the railroad because of the advancing Federal forces during the Civil War. Most of these letters were written by R.R. Cuyler, President of the Central of Georgia Railroad; one letter was from T. Mayhew Cunningham. Another letter, from George W. Adams to Central Rail Road Company, 1866, contains a recommendation for Cubbedge. The notice included in this collection, dated 1873, is a pass for B.J. Cubbedge and his family to travel to the 33 mile post and return. This collection consists of photocopies.
Originals in the possession of Dr. Leander K. Powers in 1978.
