Fort Gaines Academy was established in 1831 to fill the need for higher education in Clay County, Georgia. It served in this capacity until 1903 when the county established a public school system. It was established by an act of the Georgia Legislature. The first commissioners were Samuel Johnson, Thomas B. Patterson, Leonard P. McCullom, Ira Cushman, and John Bushman.
This lottery ticket was to benefit Fort Gaines Academy in Clay County, Georgia. It was issued on March 12, 1845.
