Biographical/Historical Note

Samuel Crowley (1794-1877) was born near Savannah, Georgia. He later moved to Clay County, Missouri, and in 1837 he settled in Andrew County. He was the presiding judge for Andrew County, and in 1841 the county seat city of Union was re-named "Savannah" in honor of Judge Crowley. Crowley had twelve children and died in Oregon at one of their homes in 1877.


Scope and Content Note

This collection consists of land grants, photographs, and book excerpts all pertaining to Samuel Crowley's life in Savannah, Missouri. Included are a picture of the "historical tree" under which Judge Samuel Crowley held court; an excerpt from a book on the history of the Platte Purchase, which resulted in the formation of Andrew County, regarding the first settlers of the county and the founding of Savannah, Missouri; an excerpt from History of Andrew County, State of Missouri containing a brief biography of Crowley; an excerpt from History of Northwest Missouri containing Crowley's biography; and two pictures from The Trail Blazers, one of the elm tree and one of Samuel Crowley.
