Biographical/Historical Note
Facing the impending invasion of Northern troops into Georgia in 1864, and with few men left to defend the state's coast, the women of McIntosh County requested the governor to sanction them a military troop. According to their resolution, these women desired to be like the "Spartan women of old" and defend their state and governor. They also declared that General Lawton seemed "determined to leave us to our fate;" it is unclear why the group chose "Lawton Protectors" as the group's name while maintaining such a poor view of its namesake.
Scope and Content Note
This collection consists of the resolution of the Lawton Protectors of McIntosh County, Georgia, offering the Governor of Georgia their military services. The company's fight song and muster roll are also included.
