Biographical/Historical Note

William H. Campbell served with the South Carolina Palmetto Light Artillery during the United States Civil War. He entered the war as a Captain and was promoted to Major during the war. He served as the Post Commander at Leagres Point on James Island in South Carolina to help protect the harbor of Charleston, South Carolina.

This tri-monthly return, dated May 17, 1864, shows the number of troops stationed at Legares Point on James Island, South Carolina under Major W.H. Campbell, Post Commander. The return is for the 12th Georgia Artillery Battalion.
