Biographical/Historical Note

William N. Holt (1841-1886) was born in Johnson County, North Carolina. Curing the Civil War, he served in the 55th North Carolina Regiment and was severely wounded at the battle of Gettysburg. He arrived in Savannah in 1877, where he ran a brokerage business for several years; he eventually established the firm of Ellis, Holt, and Company. Holt was one of the founders of the Naval Stores Exchange and a recording secretary of the Georgia Historical Society. He built a home on Whitaker Street. Holt died of malaria at the age of 45.

Scope and Content Note

This collection consists of business and personal correspondence, including letters from William Holt's relatives in North Carolina. Also included are receipts for transactions with various Savannah merchants and several photographs.
